Michael F. Obrand
Michael Obrand was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. His family moved to California when he was a teenager. He has been married to his wife, Cynthia for over 40 years. Michael and Cynthia have three children.
Mr. Obrand received a Wheeler Scholarship to attend the University of California at Berkeley. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
He attended law school at the University of California Hastings College of the Law where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1973. At Hastings, Mr. Obrand was an editorial associate of the Hastings Law Journal and a member of the Thurston Honor Society.
Mr. Obrand has substantial experience in general business, real estate, employment and criminal litigation, including a successful record as a trial lawyer. He has litigated hundreds of cases to a conclusion in trial courts in California and Colorado. In real estate cases, he has represented individual buyers and sellers as well as major real estate brokers such as Coldwell Banker and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, in cases of fraud, non‑disclosure, specific performance and breach of contract. He has also mediated numerous real estate and business cases.
Mr. Obrand has also litigated complex land use cases which involved zoning and a legal challenge to the approval of application for an exception to a height restriction of a specific plan.
Mr. Obrand began his legal career as a trial attorney in the Contra Costa County Public Defender’s Office where he tried several misdemeanor and felony cases to a jury.
After several years in private practice, Mr. Obrand became general counsel for Coldwell Banker’s residential brokerage company in Southern California. In that capacity, he litigated cases with significant exposure filed against Coldwell Banker which generally involved issues of fraud, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and negligence. In addition to his litigation duties, Mr. Obrand supervised the legal department for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Company in Southern California.
In 1988, Mr. Obrand and his family moved to Telluride, Colorado where he fulfilled a life‑long dream to live and practice law in the mountains. Mr. Obrand practiced general civil and criminal litigation concentrating on real estate (commercial and residential transactions, development and litigation), general business (transactions and litigation), family law, criminal and personal injury litigation.
Mr. Obrand tried several real estate, business and criminal cases to Colorado juries.
Although his practice in California and Colorado primarily focuses on real estate and business law and litigation, Mr. Obrand has defended several persons charged with crimes, including DUI, assault and battery, drug charges and, in Colorado, cases in which his clients were charged with violations of Colorado’s Skier Safety Act while skiing at the Telluride Ski Resort.
While in Telluride, Colorado, Mr. Obrand also served for three years as a member of the San Miguel County Planning Commission. He also served for approximately one year as the Executive Director of the San Miguel Regional Housing Authority and Acting Director of the Telluride Housing Authority.
Presently, Mr. Obrand is engaged in the practice of law in Orange County, California, where his practice focuses on general real estate and business law and litigation (including buyer‑seller‑broker disputes, contracts, land use and zoning matters, breach of contract, copyright infringement and trade secret litigation), and criminal litigation (DUI, misdemeanor and drug cases).
Mr. Obrand is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of California and Colorado and to the United States Supreme Court.
Jesse D. Obrand
Jesse Obrand was born and raised in Laguna Beach, California. However, he spent much of his youth in Telluride, Colorado. While in Telluride, Jesse excelled at basketball and soccer and was a 1st Team All State performer in both sports. After returning to Laguna Beach for his senior year of high school, Jesse helped lead the 1999 LBHS basketball team to their first league championship in over 36 years and a #1 CIF playoff ranking.
After graduating from Laguna Beach High School, Jesse went on to play Division 1 basketball at UC Irvine, where he was a member of UC Irvine’s 2002 Big West Conference Regular Season Championship team. While playing at UC Irvine, Jesse received a Big West Conference Scholar/Athlete award for outstanding academic achievement during the basketball season. Jesse is also a proud supporter of the UC Irvine Anteater Athletic Fund, donating annually to the Men’s Basketball Program.
Jesse surfs and continues to play basketball in his free time, and during the basketball season he can be found sitting courtside at the Bren Events Center for UC Irvine Men’s Basketball games. In addition, Jesse also volunteers with the Laguna Beach High School boys’ basketball team, coaching and teaching skill development, as well as assisting in fundraising.
Jesse received his B.A. in History from the University of California at Irvine. After graduating from UC Irvine, Jesse moved to Monterey, California and attended the Monterey College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 2009. At Monterey College of Law, Jesse was one of the top students in his class and was a Heisler Moot Court Finalist, where he zealously argued free speech rights on behalf of various broadcast stations in front of a distinguished panel of appellate court justices. As a result of Jesse’s advanced achievement in oral advocacy, he was inducted into the Heisler Society.
Prior to graduating from law school, Jesse worked for Fischer Schrader, LLP in Monterey, California, where he gained experience in construction defect litigation. After graduating and passing the California Bar, Jesse joined his father, Michael, and formed the Obrand Law Group.
Since being admitted to the California Bar in June 2010, Jesse has gained substantial experience in real estate and business litigation, as well as personal injury. Jesse has also successfully tried several cases, both individually and as co-counsel with Michael Obrand.
Jesse has represented national real estate broker Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Company in litigation in Orange and Los Angeles counties. In the fall of 2012, Jesse and Michael successfully defended Coldwell Banker in a complex 5-week jury trial in downtown Los Angeles. The Obrand Law Group also represented Coldwell Banker in the subsequent appeal of that ruling, ultimately obtaining a six figure award in attorney’s fees for Coldwell Banker.
Jesse currently represents Berkshire Hathaway Home Services California Properties and their real estate agents in various real estate related litigation in Orange, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Jesse also represents individual clients in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Jesse is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of California.
